Tested with a clean barebones install of Debian 6.0, kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64 (generic, includes all drivers). Same results as previous tests.
Tested with kernel 2.6.38-2-amd64 and linux-base installed from sid/unstable repository, same results again. In all three of my tests with 2.6.38-2, the SFTP transfer of a 450 MB file froze randomly, and the host stopped responding over the network. Hitting any key on the keyboard connected to the host immediately resumed network connectivity. If I let the host sit for a few minutes without intervention, network connectivity eventually resumed and these two lines were written to the kernel log:
