Some extra info: it also occurs on a single core:
$ taskset 0x1 ./a.out

last_time.tv_sec) || (current_time.tv_nsec >= last_time.tv_nsec)' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)
Another thing: on my system the assert usually gets hit in less than a
second.

Also, I heard from another user who also could reproduce it, so it's not
specific to my hardware. I'll ask him to submit details.
