Yes, i915 started working correctly for me with 2.6.32-19 (currently using 2.6.32-20 with i915 successfully). Andrew pointed me to this bug at DebConf10 - I had just purchased a ThinkPad X201, installed Squeeze a few days before heading to NYC, and was forced to use vesa for any video. Using the older 2.6.32-9 kernel allowed use of i915 instead of vesa, and starting with 2.6.32-19 I can use i915.
