but let me suggest, to simply use file and not try to find out this
manually.
Of course this would add you an ugly depends, but you could e.g. make
the uncompress command configurable via command line switch, and if
nothing is given ("auto") and file/libmagic is there, that is used.
Hardcoding that has always the problem that you have to keep track on
many possible changes.
