just found the problem: I had that stupid 'vga=791' as boot parameter which conflicted with KMS. The current kernel in sid runs fine without it. Sorry for that huge waste of time. What this bug was actually about never resolved but since it's about an old kernel we probably don't have to care much. Hauke -- .''`.
