In recent kernel builds, pcspkr is not included as a compiled module.
This made my pc silent when I wanted to retain the beeps.
I tried using snd-pcsp with the following result:

This machine has a 1998 BIOS (Intel 440BX chipset) and does not seem to
be compatible with snd-pcsp.
I've recompiled a kernel with pcspkr enabled as a module, but wondered why
it was no longer included in the Debian build.
