I too have this problem on a Samsung R20 Plus using an LG Viewty mobile as a modem, and on an Aspire One with the same phone. It happens as soon as pppd exits, without removing the USB cable. It doesn't happen every time, but too often to ignore. I have to disconnect via a script, which does a reboot after 60 seconds if not interrupted.
