There is a widely-reported problem with the r8169 driver in certain configurations. Auto-link detection does not work, and while the device comes up it can't connect and the physical link light on the device turns off during the bootup process (maybe when the r8169 module is loaded). I have two boxes: using the same Debian distribution on both, and the same exact card (i.e., the same actual card, not the same type of card), it works fine in one but not in the other. Most of the solutions that have been discussed involve powering off the box to reset wake-on-LAN functionality. That doesn't work for me. The only solution I have found is to override link negotiation with ethtool -s eth1 autoneg off. This at least makes the card usable, but I can't use 1000BaseT/gigabit ethernet. If I try to force it with ethtool -s eth1 speed 1000, the link goes back down and is unusable no matter what else I do. I've tried all the suggestions listed here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=538448 None of them work for me. I didn't see another placeholder for this bug in BTS, so I filed this.
