Package: linux-image-2.6.16-1-k7
Version: 2.6.16-10
Severity: normal
I have an ASRock 939A8X-M, which reportedly has an ULi 5289 SATA (rev 10)
controller.
When I set the controller to 'non-RAID mode' in BIOS, current Debian kernels
(tried 2.6.15 and 2.6.16) will not boot. GRUB, the kernel and the initrd load
fine, the sata_uli module loads as well. It recognizes 2 SATA channels but no
disks on them - consequently, I have no root device.
When using initrd-tools (tried yaird as well) I can unload and reload the
sata_uli
from the busybox shell I get dropped into after a few minutes, which causes the
driver to recognize the disks. I can then exit the debug shell and the system
will
start up normally. That isn't overly practical, though.
Setting the controller to 'RAID mode' in BIOS fixes the issue and everything
is recognized on first try. But since I don't plan on using the fakleraid
I'd rather leave it turned off.
Interestingly my Knoppix 4.0 CD works in both modes, but it has storage modules
compiled in, I think.
Thank you,
C.
Please don't hesitate to ask for more info, for the time being I've attached
a lspci -vvv.

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.18-1
there is no second bug report on the uli sata drivers,
so i guess this must have been fixed inbetween with newer sata merge.
please report back if you can still reproduce with up to date testing.
