I have experimented extensively with 'pm-suspend' -- the behavior is always the same: when I push the power button or reopen the lid, the power light goes from blinking to solid, the fan turns on, the hard drive spins up, and then nothing. The screen remains blank, the backlight off, and the keyboard unresponsive. The only way to get it out of this state is to hold down the power button until the computer turns off, and then turn it back on.
Yes, I am using the closed-source Atheros drivers for the wireless modem, but the symptoms are exactly the same even if that driver has never been loaded. In fact, the symptoms are exactly the same even if I do "echo mem > /sys/power/state" from an init=/bin/sh boot with only the IDE drivers and dm-crypt (my HD is encrypted) loaded.
