Sorry for directly sending an email. I can't get the machine running well enough to actually send a bug report.

I have a bit of a hybrid machine, with some new hardware in it. I have a DVD attached to IDE, a 250 GB SATA drive attached to SATA1 (boot device) and a 3Ware card with 4 IDE disks (not SATA).

Debian was installed onto the SATA drive with a netinst CD, and Kanotix-2006 preview LiveCD has been used with it (with all-generic-ide pci=nommconf irqpoll) added to the boot arguments for English/ACPI on/DMA on.

I've mounted the SATA and chroot'ed into it, and then used apt-get and aptitude to move from stable to testing to unstable. From unstable, I've installed the 2.6.20-1-k7 kernel for this system with an AMD 64 X2 4800+ EE cpu.

The BIOS is set to AHCI for the SATA drive. The ACPI is set to level 2.0. The motherboard is a M2R32-MVP, with 2 GB of RAM. No overclocking or other messing around with frequencies or voltages.

If I attempt to boot into single user mode with the 2.6.20-1-k7 kernel (pci=nommconf) it hangs at 2 different places (but will reboot with CTRL-ALT-DEL in both cases). I can see in the messages flying by, that SATA is getting set up, the 3Ware disks are recognised as SCSI (as they always have been), the DVD is recognised. If irqpoll is not present, the boot hangs just after all the 3ware disk partitions are listed. When I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, I see an additional 2 messages added to the list before the reboot starts. This last message has something to do with the 3ware card. If irqpoll is present, the boot hangs after listing all the SCSI partitions and all the partitions on the SATA drive. Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL again shows another 2 message fly by, the last one being that 3ware message of some kind.

I've tried

Trying to debug the install has not been fun. I can Google all I want, and find all kinds of advice on this that and the other thing. Some dating back 2 or 3 years. What would be nice is if there was some kind of page that listed all the boot parameters that are available for the libata (ahci) and 3ware (ide not sata) modules. I would presume that there is some documentation in the kernel source tree, so I guess that is the next place I will look. After rebooting Kanotix and chrooting.

If you had any advice or suggestions, that would be wonderful. Questions I will try to respond to. I am not subscribed to the list (under my own or this email address).
