That is quite possible, but is very likely due to changes in the upstream
kernel and not because of problems in the Debian kernel. I have the same
issue with my Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop.
The reason that Knoppix works is quite likely that it uses a much older
kernel (2.6.11 instead of 2.6.18).
