I'd vote for handling this with alternatives: /etc/kernel.d/bootloader -> /etc/alternatives/kernel-update-bootloader -> /etc/lilo.update.sh /etc/kernel.d/mkinitrd -> /etc/alternatives/kernel-update-initrd -> /etc/yaird/run-from-postinst
