I had some time to work on this today and found a possible solution. The smsc_ircc2 module in the newer 2.6 kernels appears to conflict with the 8250_pnp module. The 8250_pnp module will load first, creating the device, but then udev will load smsc_ircc2 which blocks the device resulting in the "LSR safety check" message.
I was experiencing the same issue, but once I added smsc_ircc2 to my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file the problem disappeared. I now have access to /dev/ttyS0. This may be a hardware specific problem. For reference, I am using an HP/Compaq nc6000 laptop. I hope that helps. -- Bill Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
