grub in sarge has a strange method of configuration where you make your changes in the commented-out portion of the config file and update-grub uses these settings when it regenerates this file when called after kernel upgrade. This should be described somewhere in your grub documentation (I learned about it in an old HOWTO on the web, but my links to it are no longer valid). Please verify that this is indeed the problem and reply to this bug report.
