On a system that works with 2.6.16-2-k7_2.6.16-18 upgrading to 2.6.17-2-k7_2.6.17-7 results in a system for which the mouse (a Logitech TrackMan) is flaky (jumps around on the screen) and which feels sluggish (perhaps just poor task switching) and for which typing occurs in fits and starts.
