Upstream is not doing it and Debian has written it on their flag (DFSG and SC) to get it done. That means Debian has to do it. If that means etch will be delayed a year then etch will be delayed one year. THAT fact was the begining of the thread. Showing that the kernel is not ready to be frozen in accordance to the timeline because the firmware is still not removed. If you can't live with that delay then please start a GR to get an exemption like sarge had.
