I am in process of setting up DELL Poweredge 2800 server ( 2cpus single core i.e all together 2 cpus; 3.6 GHZ; 2MB L2 cache; Xeon processor). I installed Debian 3.1 with 2.4.27 kernel (default option; total of 14 CD's).
Later on it, when we did "cat /proc/cpuinfo … it shows us only one cpu.
From the news group someone suggested us to update the kernel to : kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp
Now after updating kernel cat /proc/cpuinfo shows 4 cpus instead of 2 cpus we have. Also it shows only 16 KB cache. I am not sure, it shows L1 or L2 cache.
On further looking at : http://packages.debian.org/stable/base/kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp, I came to know that this kernel is for Pentium 4.
May I know, what is the exact name of Debian kernel I should be using for this server and where to get it?
Can It be updated with apt-get install ??
Thanks.
