Hi

kernel-wedge is the set of tools that is used to generate parts of the
udebs for the kernel. In the past this included also the FreeBSD
kernel, but now it is solely used by Linux.

As those tools are used during the build of the package, they rely
heavily on a particular layout generated within the debian directory.
This was given in the past, but we are now restructuring how the Linux
kernel is setup in Debian. To do that the package build will not longer
generate this particular intermediate layout in the future.

Now we need to support this new layout in kernel-wedge, so it is able to
find everything. As long as kernel-wedge is maintained separate, it
needs to support both layouts for a long time. Due to the single use
state of this package, supporting multiple things is not a good use of
our time.

This is why we want to merge kernel-wedge into the Linux packaging, as
sole user of this set of tools. This way we can handle breakages
directly. Do you see any problems with that?

In the future we'll most likely reimplement the functionality of
kernel-wedge anyway, so we can support also split up normal packages.

Regards,
Bastian
