I have tested the image on an IBM 8247-42L inside a PowerKVM virtual machine. Removing the patch again fixes the problem for me. However, at least on big-endian ppc64, debian-installer does not accept any keyboard input after the language menu shows up. So, either the system has crashed at this point or there is something wrong with the input device.
