Package: src:linux
Version: 5.10.120-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: benjamin.mo...@gmail.com
Dear Maintainer,
On a Thinkpad Helix 2, the internal audio devices (speaker,
microphone, and headset port) work with kernel 4.19.0-20-amd64
(4.19.235-1), but are broken with kernel 5.10.0-15-amd64 (5.10.120-1).
For example:
pasuspender -- aplay -D plughw:CARD=broadwellrt286,DEV=0 \
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav
This command works as expected on 4.19.0-20-amd64; on 5.10.0-15-amd64
it gives the error:
aplay: main:830: audio open error: Invalid argument
On the newer kernel, the following messages appear in dmesg:
intel_catpt INT3438:00: firmware: direct-loading firmware intel/IntcSST2.bin
intel_catpt INT3438:00: firmware ready timeout
intel_catpt INT3438:00: boot firmware failed: -110
intel_catpt INT3438:00: ASoC: error at snd_soc_pcm_component_pm_runtime_get
on catpt-platform: -110
Codec: ASoC: BE open failed -110
System PCM: ASoC: failed to start some BEs -110
It looks like the broadwell-rt286 and other "soc" audio drivers were
somewhat restructured between these two kernel releases and I'm
guessing that's when this bug was introduced.
(Confusingly, the keyboard/dock (at least the "Ultrabook Pro" version)
has its own internal speaker which appears as a USB audio device.
That device seems to work properly, but is not so useful since it
doesn't have a headphone port or a microphone.)
