I cannot confirm if this tool will work for forcing Gen4 on the Gen5 link since I see some reports that those trying it failed - but I do suspect they were not using the correct command-line incantation! https://github.com/alexforencich/verilog-pcie/blob/master/scripts/pcie_set_speed.sh It wraps setpci so in theory should work - not sure how using it if the device is the primary storage device with mounted file-systems will affect things though. May need to boot the host from other media so the NVME is idle.
