Package: src:linux
Version: 6.5.10-1~bpo12+1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: deb...@simg.de+

Dear Maintainer,

I detected file corruption issues with newer kernels, namely these kernel
packages:

* linux-image-6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64
* linux-image-6.7.12+bpo-amd64

With an older kernel these issues do not appear:

* linux-image-6.1.0-0.deb11.5-amd64-unsigned

The errors occur in a high load situation: 8 threads read data over network,
process them and write them to SSD (CPU, RAM and I/O intense). Under that
condition, errors occurs quite often, approximately once every 10GB written to
SSD.
Because no one else recognized such issues, I think it has something to do with
the high system utilization.

Because older kernels work, finding out which kernel change cause this error is
easier than finding out which exact condition causes the error. So, which
kernel version I should test?

A few observations / considerations:
* It is uncertain whether it is an issue with the ext4 module. nvm / pcie
modules are other candidates
* Mostly (but not always) a 256kB portion of the file seems to be corrupted
* I never detected a file system corruption. This may be random.

Here are some information that may help

We discussed this issue in today's team meeting again,
https://meetbot.debian.net/debian-kernel/2024/debian-kernel.2024-10-23-19.00.html
and we are now closing the bug, as is sounds quite plausible that this
is caused either due to firmware or a hardware bug.

Still, and very importantly, if you find out more on the issue, feel
free to reopen it.

Regards,
Salvatore
