Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Booting Kernel linux-image-5.18.0-4-686-pae on a Pentium 3 600 (Coppermine) or an Athlon XP (I can find out the exact model number if you need). Older kernel versions work. The current kernel works on a Pentium 4 3 GHz (I can find out the exact model number if you need). Error message: https://picr.eu/images/2022/08/29/qUlKO.jpg German discussion in a newsgroup: https://de.comp.os.unix.linux.misc.narkive.com/JzfZxhgj/kernelpanic-5-18-0-4-686-pae-attempted-to-kill-the-idle-task * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Booting this specific kernel, older kernels work. * What was the outcome of this action? Kernel panic, can't boot system. * What outcome did you expect instead? Booting the system the nromal way on the specified hardware. -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached ** Model information ** PCI devices: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge [8086:7190] (rev 03) Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort+ >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 64 Region 0: Memory at 44000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=4M] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel 00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge [8086:7191] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz+ UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 64 Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=32 I/O behind bridge: [disabled] [16-bit] Memory behind bridge: 40000000-408fffff [size=9M] [32-bit] Prefetchable memory behind bridge: 41000000-41ffffff [size=16M] [32-bit] Secondary status: 66MHz+ FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort+ <SERR- <PERR- BridgeCtl: Parity- SERR- NoISA+ VGA+ VGA16- MAbort- >Reset- FastB2B+ PriDiscTmr- SecDiscTmr- DiscTmrStat- DiscTmrSERREn- 00:10.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] [10b7:9200] (rev 78) Subsystem: 3Com Corporation 3C905CX-TX/TX-M Fast Etherlink for PC Management NIC [10b7:1000] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 64 (2500ns min, 2500ns max), Cache Line Size: 32 bytes Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 11 Region 0: I/O ports at 1000 [size=128] Region 1: Memory at 42000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128] Expansion ROM at 18000000 [virtual] [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: 3c59x Kernel modules: 3c59x 00:14.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA [8086:7110] (rev 02) Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle+ MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 00:14.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE [8086:7111] (rev 01) (prog-if 80 [ISA Compatibility mode-only controller, supports bus mastering]) Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 64 Region 0: I/O ports at 01f0 [size=8] Region 1: I/O ports at 03f4 Region 2: I/O ports at 0170 [size=8] Region 3: I/O ports at 0374 Region 4: I/O ports at 1420 [size=16] Kernel driver in use: ata_piix Kernel modules: ata_piix, ata_generic 00:14.2 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB [8086:7112] (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 64 Interrupt: pin D routed to IRQ 11 Region 4: I/O ports at 1400 [size=32] Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd Kernel modules: uhci_hcd 00:14.3 Bridge [0680]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI [8086:7113] (rev 02) Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Interrupt: pin ? routed to IRQ 9 Kernel driver in use: piix4_smbus Kernel modules: i2c_piix4 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd.
