thanks for your lengthy report.

This problem does appear to have been fixed upstream, and if you have a
chance to test 2.6.12 (or the hopefully very soon to be released 2.6.14)
that would be great.

In terms of 2.6.8, I don't see a big deal with something like this
going into a sarge update. I've isolated the upstream fix as

Is it possible for you to test that? 
I can build you an image if that helps, though it
would be easier (for me) if I didn't have to.

I also found a related fix. It seems a little to complex for
inclusion on 2.6.8 and at the very least only the BIOS handoff
bit seems relevant. And I'm not even sure that it is important.
