Package: src:linux Version: 5.10.4-1 Severity: normal X-Debbugs-Cc: mertdi...@gmail.com
Suspend to memory operation takes 5+ minutes long. When suspend operation is invoked, display is turned off as expected, but the power led and the fan noise indicates the machine isn't suspended. Machine doesn't respond to keyboard or power button presses. After 5 minutes or so the suspend is completed. Power led indicates machine is in sleep, and pressing a keyboard button wakes it up as expected. In the end suspend & resume is successful, but it takes an extremely long time to suspend the computer. Resume operation is fast. 1. Method of invocation doesn't matter - echo mem > /sys/power/state, systemctl suspend or Fn+F3) 2. Whether the X tty has been used or not *does* matter. - Successive suspend operations are fast, but only if they're done from text tty. If I ever switch to X tty after boot or resume, then the following suspend operation takes a long time. After a resume, if the suspend was done in a text console and I invoke another suspend *without ever switching to X console* the suspend operation is quick. 3. If I boot with nouveau.noaccel=1 argument the bug is not encountered, suspend is quick. 3. Kernel version and configuration: This is where it gets messy. - Debian 4.19 kernel package doesn't have the bug. 5.9 and 5.10 certainly has. - I tried to track it back with old versions from snapshots.debian.org but it got confusing quickly. - Debian packages 5.5 and later is certainly affected. Debian 5.4 package seemed to be working in my first try but it also showed the bug in a second try. 4. I tried to bisect it with upstream kernels and it was even more confusing. - Latest stable kernel was 5.10.3 at the time and it doesn't have the bug (despite Debian 5.10.2-trunk and 5.10.4 showing it. Though I didn't try upstream 5.10.4 yet I guess it'll work fine. - Trying a bisection between upstream 5.10 and 4.19 proved to be inconclusive because the interim builds give conflicting results. Despite doing a bisection twice both ended up in very unrelated commits. It isn't clear if it's an upstream bug, configuration bug, downstream patch, maybe even a compiler difference? nouveau.debug= option also proved to be useless as it prints megabytes of repetitive messages. I have no idea how else to troubleshoot this issue.
