Hi,
i'm running Debian GNU/Linux testing (well, mostly) on a custom
PC:
AMD Athon 64 3000+,
Board is a GigaByte GA-K8VT800 Pro with Via VT8237
Serial ATA Controller and a Maxtor 6Y160M0 harddisk.

On boot the kernel fails to recognize the SATA interface and/or simply
to load the necessary driver ... result is a kernel panic.

There's an additional - but probably not really related - caveat:
On IA-32 SATA devices are addressed via their respective IDE devices,
whereas the AMD64 kernel uses SCSI devices ... it would be really,
really nice to have a CONSISTENT addressing scheme for all the different
architectures!
Sincerly,

Steffen Elste
