With kernel 4.11, a feature has been added which allows the LED drivers to indicate why a change in value has occurred. Including allowing the userland to know if it was a software or a hardware event which made the brightness change. This would be super-useful to have, especially when trying to write tooling to manage keyboard backlights on modern thinkpads. I believe the tpacpi driver has been updated to support this feature, so all which would be required from the kernel maintainers would be to enable the feature CONFIG_LEDS_BRIGHTNESS_HW_CHANGED and then, ideally, upload a new backport :-) Thanks, Daniel.
