This particular machine has successfully been running Debian for many years, through Lenny to Jessie. It looks like I needed to add "nointremap" to the kernel command line when it was upgraded to Wheezy back in 2013. My comments from the time reference https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=887006 (which no longer appears to be readable by me) and http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1304.2/00020.html (which I understand to mean that "nointremap" will always be required on this machine unless the BIOS is upgraded to a version that would have the same effect as "nointremap" anyway.)
