Hello, I am another user bitten by the same bug on an i386 machine (but everything seems to be fine on amd64 machines). I experience the same exact misbehavior (version 4.7.8-1 fails to boot: stuck while loading initrd); I have tried the same things to no avail. I have currently altered GRUB_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub, in order to force the machine to automatically boot the previous kernel version (4.6.4-1). I hope the bug may be fixed soon. Thanks to the Debian Kernel Team for any help they may provide. -- http://www.inventati.org/frx/ There's not a second to spare!
