An update on this bug.
While kernel 4.0 didn't work, kernel 4.1 did.
However this success was short-lived:
While kernel 4.2 and 4.3 do boot on this host, they make X crash (reverting to
kernel 4.1 or to 3.16 from Stable works fine - See Bug#808871). I suspect this
is partly due to the i586 drop. While non-PAE i686 should boot fine on a Geode
LX (but not on earlier Geode GX2 or GX1, which are strictly i586), AFAIK, not
all i686 instructions supported on bog-standard Intel hardware are correctly
supported on Geode LX.
It should be noted that, unless this issue can be resolved, it would
essentially mean that Debian won't be able to run on the OLPC XO-1.
Additionally, dropping i586 support essentially means that none of the GX2 or
GX1-based thin clients will work with LTSP anymore, which will affect Skole
Linux user base as well, since it's essentially a Debian derivative.
