On request from waldi, I've compiled a -386 kernel (using gcc-4.0) with one change in ./debian/arch/i386/config.386: - CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y + # CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is not set The problem was solved when installing from a mini.iso built using this kernel.
