I put the hard drive into a new, trusted, x86-based system using a 2.6.12-rc6 kernel and lo and behold. The same error happens after about 15gb of data copied to the disk. This proves that the hard drive is bad. This is a less than a year old drive that was working fine up to the point that I transfer it to the Mac. Somewhere along that line, something caused the drive to die. Who knows why.
