According to Google, these symptoms are usually caused by either PROM version which is incompatible with the CPU configuration or broken memory. Did this machine run fine in an SMP configuration before you have tried Debian on it? To eliminate the possibility of hardware failures, can you try removing memory chips one-by-one and see if this has any effect?
