Further information: The system in question is a Celestica A8440 [1].
If I pass "nomce" to the kernel boot options, to bypass Machine Check Exceptions, then I can almost get the kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8-smp to a working state. It hangs on loading the "Real Time Clock Driver v1.12" but I can bypass this with Ctrl-C. It hangs again on "Setting the System Clock using the Hardware Clock as reference", but again I can Ctrl-C past this and get to a login prompt. Unsurprisingly, the machine then hangs on shutdown at "Saving the System Clock time to the Hardware Clock".
