I am certainly not qualified to judge the cause of this problem, I can only tell you I do not see these problems in 2.4.26. In the previous version of 2.4.27, I was able to duplicate the problem much faster (simply untarring a big file or watching a couple of digital camera photos with feh was enough before to trigger the kernel paging request error).
