this is fixed. Or rather there's another memleak not mention in the article you quote (and also present since early 2.6) for which I'll commit a fix soon.
and the problems with cdrecord [1]?
this was broken in cdrecord but AFAIK has been fixed.
I just tried to burn a CD with the cdrecord in Unstable (4:2.0+a38-1)
and it appears this has not been fixed. That is to say, I can still only burn CDs as root. :(
