I can't believe I actually bothered to check this, but it turned out that getting support for an AT keyboard into the initrd is a matter of putting the modules into /etc/mkinitrd/modules and rebuilding the whole shebang. This is such a small effort that it does not justify building the drivers into the kernel, especially since they are useless anyway on most systems. > > i open this bug report to start a discussion about this.
