I also had this problem. I upgraded from version 2.6.8-2 to 2.6.8-3 then things went incredibly slowly. I'm using devfs. Could this be a problem?
Hardware: Toshiba Satellite Pro 4270. Celeron 650MHz (laptop, yet again)
