Jens, i believe that he is indeed right in saying that suggesting to manually edit a kernel is not a good idea. The only reason this is acceptable is that no newbie enduser will ever try to install on prep hardware anyway, so this should not be too problematic. I still believe that mkvmlinuz could be adapted to recompile the one prep file which contains the default command line, and then handle it properly. Will not work for chrp though. Notice that a default debian installs installs gcc anyway right now, so this could not be a major problem. Friendly, Sven Luther
