Yes, this is exactly what I meant. In previous versions of KDE login screen (or kddm perhaps) there was an explicit menu option to drop into console, it's gone now. I was using it for so long I forgot one can access the console via Ctrl+Alt+F#. Thanks to everyone who responded.
