kompare doesn't

Has anyone tried kompare recently? I haven't used it before but needed 
it to track down why google maps won't load the new version of a kml 
file but still loads the old one (both pass the w3schools xml validation 
test).

I can point it to the two files I want to compare but the compare button 
remains grey even after I tell it where to find the diff program.
