Thanks Werner,
but what if I want a static address ?
Isn't network manager mostly useful on a laptop where you are
more likely to switch from ethernet to wifi or another SSID ?
This is a desktop, connected by ethernet wire to my router.
Network manager was part of my vanilla jessie install,
can I just uninstall it and would SW manager then not bother ?
I do not understand why applications need to ask NM
whether the network is reachable (when it actually is!)
I'd really rather give the KDE tool a try instead of reverting to synaptic.

Hi baldyeti,
I'm not realy familiar with this, but I guess Marco means that you
probably edited your
/etc/network/interfaces file or you got it from dist_upgrade in a not
standard shape.
Manual entries in this file can maybe cause your problem.
Try to change the file to standard-entries.
My interfaces on jessie looks like this:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Werner

Can someone suggest what might cause this ?
Your /etc/network/interfaces, i suppose.
ciao!
Erh, that is bit too short for me to comprehend, Marco!
Yes, I have an /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth0
with a static address. This seems to work fine. Perhaps
it interferes with "network manager" which I have no use for;
what is the interaction with SW updates ?
