Hi again, On further digging, it looks like the ubuntu people have fixed the khelpcenter problem by patching kdelibs directly. The patch is quite small (in KApplication::invokeHelp(), start khelpcenter directly instead of using dcop).
I'll file a bug for this against debian's kdelibs shortly. In the meantime, if anyone knows how debian has fixed the kfmclient problem where ubuntu hasn't, I'd still be interested -- I haven't yet worked out why this works in sid but not jaunty.
