Well, I got the very same printer today and it works like a charm, so lets sum 
up what I did:

        - plug in the printer
        - power it on
        - hotplug did all the usb stuff
        - tried to install a generic driver, which lead to the "empty pages" 
problem
        - installed the lpd driver from Brother
        - installed the cups wrapper from Brother
        - followed the instruction, which is basically going to localhost:631 
and       
        adding the printer by hand, because it didn't work automagically. I 
guess 
        (but haven't tried it) that at this point the printer will be even on 
the       
        list inside the control center.
        - printed a test page
