This rather mysterious problem presented itself, when I was installing Debian on my wife's notebook to show her how dependable Linux is :-). After two hours of banging our heads again the wall, we found out that the problem was that the video adapter doesn't support DPMI. Try to put Option "DPMI" "Off" to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
