KDE3 freezes when kbuildsycoca runs... It may be tough to see on a modern machine but on this old 66MHz box "top" (run from a text vt) clearly shows kbuildsycoca eating up all the CPU cycles it can get when KDE is unresponsive. You may be able to see it if you start top doing a fast update, then make changes to a directory containing *.desktop files. - Bruce
