I think what you will have is the REAL "console" font (ie the one called console). It is fairly thick and chunky. I am pretty sure that before the latest problems, you had a version of the "fixed" font, and that even when you requested the "console" font it didn't find it (due to a bug decoding .pcf.gz fonts in libfreetype which has recently been fixed).
