That's not the proper way to start kdm (or any other display manager). In the Debian way it's :

debian:/home/jerry# /etc/init.d/kdm start

To see if it's running, run "top" in a shell or ps aux | grep kdm.
Anyway, try to dpkg -P kdm and reinstall it, it might work.
