I'm not sure each one carries the debian packages, but they do exist. I get them with this line in /etc/apt/sources.list deb ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/languages/java/linux/debian unstable main non-free Installing j2re1.4 should get you going. It requires java-common, which is in available in debian stable, testing, and unstable.
